What is the major difference between search engine and a directory?

There are indeed a lot of differences between search engines and directories. If I were to search say, auto dealers Chicago, on a search engine, I'd get as a result a page of a site not necessarily the home page where as a directory search would show me only homepages that are relevant. Search engines are more relevant to the actual state of things on the internet thus more trust worthy.

If I search for car dealers in Chicago, search engine, I think the results are not necessarily the home directory search site pages will tell me about only page. Search engine on the Internet about the actual state of things, and therefore more trustworthy.
